Things come to a head when Hartman discovers a jelly donut, considered contraband in the barracks (and forbidden for Lawrence to eat as he is too overweight). Drill Instructor Gunnery Sergeant Hartman introduces himself as a firm but fair instructor to the recruits, though the overweight and clumsy Leonard Lawrence begins to irk Hartman and the rest of the platoon with his constant errors and mistakes.
